MyHeritage Chromosome Browser

In February, MyHeritage DNA released its long-awaited chromosome browser. Woot-woot. Shout praises. Celebrate however you will. This is tool is a game changer for me and I'm enjoying reviewing my results in a user friendly tool. Check this out.




I manage kits for myself, my brother, and my two aunts. This allows me to link their DNA results to my tree. I LOVE this feature better than Ancestry DNA. I have five people that I'll be purchasing tests for who aren't interested in tree building. So, I'm in for a lot of work to get their trees built and connected to their DNA results.

ANY-WAY, back on track.

I began a one-to-many search with my brother, my two aunts, and then a fourth person. Y'all, I don't have to limit myself to triangulation. I can do whatever five people 'angulation' is. And that's where the power of this tool comes in.

When I reviewed these results, I found matches for the 'green' person on chromosome 3 and chromosome 7. Person green matches my brother and myself but not our aunts. IF I had stopped there, I would have assumed person green was a match via my father's side of the tree.

I almost missed the additional matches further down, but I think folks on the other side of heaven wanted me to not miss a key clue.

Once I saw this section, I had to change my assumptions. Person green, the match, was related to all of us in a sizeable segment. Therefore, mystery person is related through my maternal line. Person green likley matches my brother and I but not my aunts because that's the DNA my mother had that my aunts didn't receive. So, that's momma's DNA right there y'all.

So now, I can go to my surname chart and see what I can. As it turns out, I later learned a new wisdom nugget and discovered that this person is through my mother's mother's mother's line. This narrowed things down further. Unfortunately, the surname list that I have assembled is very brief as it's the line with the greatest wholes.

As it turns out, I had made my surname chart incorrectly earlier. I have a HUGE section of blankness because I don't know my grandmother's biological father. Her surname at birth is that of her biological mother. Hooray. This is what it looks like now. The far right colum is the line the 'green' person connects into.


So, is it possible that the green person is from the Anderson, Sparks, Weakly, Simons, or McCarty? The chances are small but that would be lovely.

The greater possiblity is that 'Green-Match' is from the biological father line or the Swedish Anderson line.

Now, despite this match being difficult to match from the genealogical records, the tools on MyHeritage are exciting. I can pinpoint out of 64 possible lines, the 16 surnames the match will turn up through. If I can find more matches to person green to my aunts and my brother and I, then their trees could be used to solve our adoption and who is William Anderson questions.

There really was no way to refine the results on MyHeritage DNA before. So... I'm super excited.

When Do You Post a Second Photo on Find A Grave?

Many people have varying degrees of photography skills. Some are point and shoot photographers. Others are very skilled. In the age when we're able to take photos of gravestones, the question arises, when should we post a second photo on a Find A Grave profile (or other websites)? Best Reason to Share a Proof Copy of Your Family History

Have you written a family history? Are you hesitant to print it for fear there are mistakes from the grammatical to the historically accurate? Why not publish a proof copy and share with a few family members? You'll soon learn the best reason to share a proof copy, is feedback.
