What can you find in Post Office Records?

Birth, marriage, and death records, oh my! After you scour the vital records, you moved on to the census records. Then what? Well, Diane L Richards has three quiz-type questions to ask yourself about the Post Office.

  • Did you know that the 1800s post offices managed newspaper and magazine subscriptions?
  • Did you know that individuals weren't the only ones who subscribed to these publications? Did you know that businesses and establishments (e.g., hotels) often subscribed to publications to be read by many in a community?
  • Did you know that many 'extinct' small communities were once the backbone of the extensive post office network? Did you know the locations of these old posts offices provide important clues to where our ancestors lived

The Moments of Their Lives eConference is a fundraiser for the Lake Havasu Genealogical Society which is 'dedicated to collecting and preserving genealogical and historical data. The Lake Havasu Genealogical library currently has over 2,000 volumes of family history and genealogy books and over 6,000 periodicals.  The Lake Havasu Genealogical Society receives 25% of each registration fee to support their library and other objectives.

 During the Moments of Their Lives eConference, we will examine non-traditional records rich with in-depth details about your dearly departed. The eConference is open to anyone, with an internet connection, ready to have fun while learning!

This eConference features four hours of interactive instruction. Many speakers will take questions throughout their presentations! The speakers will convene for a final panel discussion to answer questions not finished during the webinars or any additional questions you have. It will be a great day for education and entertainment.

Diane L Richard has M.E. and M.B.A. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).  She has been a genealogy researcher since 1987 and professional since 2004. Diane focuses on southern, African-American, and lineage research plus invaluable genealogical tools. She has researched NC roots for the popular TV show "Who Do You Think You Are?" and appeared on the Bryan Cranston episode. 

She has authored almost 300 articles on genealogy topics for such publications as Internet Genealogy, Your Genealogy Today (was Family Chronicle), and other publications.  From 2010-2017 she was the editor of the blog, Upfront with NGS, and published over 2000 posts. She is currently editor of the North Carolina Genealogical Society (NCGS) journal.

When Do You Post a Second Photo on Find A Grave?

Many people have varying degrees of photography skills. Some are point and shoot photographers. Others are very skilled. In the age when we're able to take photos of gravestones, the question arises, when should we post a second photo on a Find A Grave profile (or other websites)? When I go to a cemetery I attempt to follow a few rules: Make it Tidy Get Close Capture the Lot When I do that, I generally have good results when capturing a gravestone. Best Reason to Share a Proof Copy of Your Family History

Have you written a family history? Are you hesitant to print it for fear there are mistakes from the grammatical to the historically accurate? Why not publish a proof copy and share with a few family members? You'll soon learn the best reason to share a proof copy, is feedback. My goal in 2017 was to finish the final draft of the book about my grandpa Lewis Brown. I've shared stories about him on this blog before, and I use his story often when I teach how to write family histories. However, Lewis' story needed to leave my computer and reside on my bookshelf so my children will know about this beloved great grandpa. To edit my drafts, I had used  Grammarly.com  to catch most of the glaring mistakes. Several errors might still slip through, but the book wouldn't be excruciating to read due to the obvious spelling and grammatical errors.
