Hands down, the coolest part of Roots Tech was meeting our fans. Having a booth at the Expo Hall gave our fans the opportunity to know where to find us. Unfortunately, on occasion, I was off socializing with other vendors or influencers when a fan stopped by. It's difficult to wear the many hats requisite of a first timer at such a massive conference. I felt terrible about not being available, but thankfully the booth was always staffed with at least one Fanatic.


Many fans told us they watched all of our videos. Some said they just discovered us and have been binge watching (we have at least 140 right now, thank goodness the videos are 5-7 minutes long).

Several fans were glad we brought Caleb along and said he was adorable. DNA-focused viewers commented on how Andy makes DNA understandable (a la the Gordon Ramsey nickname mentioned earlier but with Captain America saying, "Language").

Then there was me. Super excited as I recognized names on badges, even if I couldn't identify faces. I socialized with everyone about everything. Yep, I'm the Fanatic who responds on Facebook, Twitter, and the blog.

This is Susan. She's so sunny online and off. So fun to meet her in person!!!

As mentioned in the previous posts, Rootstech was a rollercoaster of emotions. Every time I became discouraged because of our miscalculations, another fan would stop by and lift my spirits. That's what is so AMAZING about the genealogy space. In the end, we want to connect and belong to one another and our ancestors. We give so much via our educational platforms. For as much as we share and serve, every supporter brightens our day, just be telling us thanks and keep at it.

At an especially low point, a family I came to our booth. The mother is a huge fan, and her husband and children have to hear us whether they like it or not.  She also provided some suggestions for future videos, and I'm eager to move her ideas to the top of the queue list.

YouTube allows Andy, Caleb and I to enter your homes and lives via your computers, phones, and tablets. It's an honor to serve each of you and share the passion for genealogy and memory keeping.


My fan Tami also tries to promote us like crazy. And I want to promote her. Check out  business Conference Keeper for the latest events in your area. Then go over to JoyFlips for your digitization purposes. 

Meeting our fans at our booth was a definite advantage to having a booth at RootsTech. Inviting people who never knew our genealogy channel existed on YouTube although they were extremely familiar with the platform gave a return of opportunities that can be measured.

Actually, it could. Before RootsTech, we were on an upward trend to have 4,000 subscribers by mid-April. By mid-March, we passed that milestone, and we're on our way to 5,000 subscribers.

Thank you to everyone who supports our YouTube channel.

When Do You Post a Second Photo on Find A Grave?

Many people have varying degrees of photography skills. Some are point and shoot photographers. Others are very skilled. In the age when we're able to take photos of gravestones, the question arises, when should we post a second photo on a Find A Grave profile (or other websites)? When I go to a cemetery I attempt to follow a few rules: Make it Tidy Get Close Capture the Lot When I do that, I generally have good results when capturing a gravestone. I may be an amateur photographer, but I can capture fairly decent photographs that do more than just document the stone, but feature and highlight it. Stephen P. Best Reason to Share a Proof Copy of Your Family History

Have you written a family history? Are you hesitant to print it for fear there are mistakes from the grammatical to the historically accurate? Why not publish a proof copy and share with a few family members? You'll soon learn the best reason to share a proof copy, is feedback. My goal in 2017 was to finish the final draft of the book about my grandpa Lewis Brown. I've shared stories about him on this blog before, and I use his story often when I teach how to write family histories. However, Lewis' story needed to leave my computer and reside on my bookshelf so my children will know about this beloved great grandpa. To edit my drafts, I had used  Grammarly.com  to catch most of the glaring mistakes. Several errors might still slip through, but the book wouldn't be excruciating to read due to the obvious spelling and grammatical errors.
