Southern California Jamboree 2018 Writers Conference


What are you doing on Thursday, May 31st? Andrew and Devon Noel Lee head to a preliminary conference before the Southern California Jamboree held at the Los Angeles Marriott - Burbank Aiport Hotel in California. We are elated to be invited to participate in the Family History Writer's Conference!

The Jamboree website says the Writer's Conference will focus on "making your family history come alive for future generations." Andy and Devon are among the speakers who have written and published stories about their ancestors.


The Fanatics Lead By Example
Devon is the most prolific writer of the duo. She has created four scrapbooks featuring her parents and two grandparents. She has written the first draft of stories for 120 ancestors and is slowly turning each draft into a final project. She's published Papa: The Story of Lewis Brown and Gone to Soon: The Story of Joseph Geißler for her family archive. She's also published her own personal history and shared it with the general public. The first installment is From Metal to Rhinestones: A Quest for the Crown (available through Amazon).  
Inspired by his wife, Andrew wrote a memoir featuring his high school essays and the teacher feedback. Let's just say, Andy was the smart-alec in English class who made articulate points as he indicated why he didn't need to read Jane Eyre. The Family History Writers Conference prior to the Jamboree is an additional day for an additional fee. It will take place on the same day as the Genetic Genealogy Conference, which has a separate conference fee. You have to pay both fees to attend classes in either conference. The Jamboree will take place June 1st and 2nd with over 100 classes for your learning delight!

When Do You Post a Second Photo on Find A Grave?

Many people have varying degrees of photography skills. Some are point and shoot photographers. Others are very skilled. In the age when we're able to take photos of gravestones, the question arises, when should we post a second photo on a Find A Grave profile (or other websites)? When I go to a cemetery I attempt to follow a few rules: Make it Tidy Get Close Capture the Lot When I do that, I generally have good results when capturing a gravestone. I may be an amateur photographer, but I can capture fairly decent photographs that do more than just document the stone, but feature and highlight it. Stephen P. Best Reason to Share a Proof Copy of Your Family History

Have you written a family history? Are you hesitant to print it for fear there are mistakes from the grammatical to the historically accurate? Why not publish a proof copy and share with a few family members? You'll soon learn the best reason to share a proof copy, is feedback. My goal in 2017 was to finish the final draft of the book about my grandpa Lewis Brown. I've shared stories about him on this blog before, and I use his story often when I teach how to write family histories. However, Lewis' story needed to leave my computer and reside on my bookshelf so my children will know about this beloved great grandpa. To edit my drafts, I had used  Grammarly.com  to catch most of the glaring mistakes. Several errors might still slip through, but the book wouldn't be excruciating to read due to the obvious spelling and grammatical errors.
