13 Collaborative Track Classes at #RootsTech 2018

 Collaboration Classes at #RootsTech


According to Dictionary.com, collaboration is "the act working with someone to produce or create something." Noted genealogist D Joshua Taylor companions collaboration between genealogy societies and researchers to move the work of family history forward at a rapid pace. It's no surprise that twelve classes at RootsTech 2018 are focused on genealogy being a team effort.

Relative Race Class at RootsTech


There is a cool class for those who love Relative Race and reality TV, check out the class on Friday at  1:30 and learn more about the show and it's partnership efforts.


Navigating the 300+ classes and labs can be challenging, and we're only on Day 2 of the available class tracks. Start planning ahead, and checking out the syllabus. Don't attend a class that will waste your time. You can often judge a class by its outline.

Our Surname Tables for DNA Research

Researching your family tree using DNA can be complicated when you haven't created a surname table as a cheat sheet for referencing your data. Andy talks about these regularly in beginner DNA classes but I hadn't created one until today! And you're about to see my jealousy rear its beastly head. Before we begin, take a look at Andy's Surname Table: Look at the five spots that are holes in the 4th GGP section. That's not bad. Best Reason to Share a Proof Copy of Your Family History

Have you written a family history? Are you hesitant to print it for fear there are mistakes from the grammatical to the historically accurate? Why not publish a proof copy and share with a few family members? You'll soon learn the best reason to share a proof copy, is feedback. My goal in 2017 was to finish the final draft of the book about my grandpa Lewis Brown. I've shared stories about him on this blog before, and I use his story often when I teach how to write family histories. However, Lewis' story needed to leave my computer and reside on my bookshelf so my children will know about this beloved great grandpa. To edit my drafts, I had used  Grammarly.com  to catch most of the glaring mistakes. Several errors might still slip through, but the book wouldn't be excruciating to read due to the obvious spelling and grammatical errors.
